The Salem art Gallery/Studio presented the work of its students in an exhibition that ended February 18, 2001. Brightly colored paintings, drawings and sculptures of various age groups are displayed in the front of the gallery room at 200, an historic blue-gray building in the Salem Village. Caroline Hooke, artist/instructor and gallery associate, Christy L. McKeighan, gallery assistant, and Ruth Sauer, artist/instructor and proprietor, arranged the display. Caroline Hooke, local artist and dollmaker, recently visited with several classes at Salem Central School to show and to talk about he rmethods of dollmaking. Students were fascinated by Hooke’s presentation, showing particular interest in how she uses anything she can find, such as sticks, feathers, clay and fur as raw materials for her dolls. The dollmaking event was hosted locally by Bancroft Library, part of an exhibition of hand-made dolls, curated by Nancy Scheemaker, and was on display during January 2001. Caroline shows strong American Indian influences, especially the spirituality and respect for nature found in the Indian philosophy, as exemplified in the four pieces of her work (above). She works in natural materials to convey her message. Interesting link: Tony McGregor For more information, please contact us at jbphotogs@earthlink.net |
